UK: Man dressed as Johnny Depp character in Pirates of the Caribbean, Captain Jack Sparrow, carried a machete to get arrested over mental health concerns
A man concerned he was not getting the mental health help he needed dressed as Captain Jack Sparrow and carried a machete in a desperate move on New Year’s Eve.
Timothy Pullar, aged 46, of Pengelly Cross, Leedstown, decided he needed to get a quick result and so had attracted the police to his address by his behaviour, after a worried neighbour called them.
When the officers arrived they found him dressed as Captain Jack Sparrow, Johnny Depp’s character from the film Pirates of the Caribbean, and showing them he was carrying a machete in his waistband; as a result he was arrested.
“He saw this as a short cut to getting that help straight away,” his solicitor Paul Gallagher told District Judge Diana Baker at Truro Magistrates’ Court.
“Once the police arrived, he deliberately put the machete into his waistband. walked out to them and showed it,” he added.
Mr Gallagher, who stressed that Pullar had not used the weapon to threaten anyone, said that he had now been fast-tracked within the mental health team.
Pullar pleaded guilty to having a machete in a public place without authority, and also to possessing 0.98g of cocaine, which was found in his possession on arrest.
Alison May for the CPS said that night a neighbour had heard him making threats and strange comments about other people.
When the officers arrived Pullar came out to them, threw back his shirt, showing a wooden-handled machete tucked into his waistband. “I have been a bit silly,” he told them.
When the cocaine was discovered he said he had found it in a night club and had put it in his pocket to use later.
Asked about his earlier comments, he said he was having difficult thoughts, that this had been ongoing, and he did not want to pretend about things any more. “If something is not done soon, I’ll do something stupid,” he told them.
Mr Gallagher said his client had been out for New Year’s Eve dressed as Captain Jack Sparrow, and had drunk quite a lot. In the early hours he had had an argument with his partner, and when his neighbour spoke to him he started making “drunken ramblings.”
District Judge Diana Baker was told by a mental health worker that since his arrest Pullar had been seen by a consultant who suggested he continued with Addaction support and had counselling. She said there were no concerns about ongoing harm from him.
After Pullar told the Judge he had negative thoughts when coming down from drinking, she asked for a full report, saying she had to make sure everything was in place for him and also for the safety of the public.
Pullar told her: “I have got help now.”
The case was adjourned to March 13.
