Update: Cayman Man Charged Following Collision & Altercation

UPDATE (2 September):

The man, age 23 of Bodden Town, who was arrested on Wednesday, 28 August, following a collision and altercation, has been formally charged with Attempted Murder, Possession of an Unlicensed Firearm, and Possession of an Unlicensed Firearm (Ammunition).

He appears in court today, 2 September.


Update (29 August):

Just before 5PM yesterday, 28 August, a 23-year-old man of Bodden Town attended the Cayman Islands Detention Centre in relation to a collision and altercation he had been involved in earlier the same day. He was subsequently also arrested by the police on suspicion of possession of an unlicensed firearm (ammunition) and attempted murder in relation to the same incident.

Following his arrest, the man became aggressive and assaulted the officers. Reasonable force was used to subdue the man, who sustained minor injuries as a result. He was taken to the hospital for treatment for those injuries as well as injuries sustained from the collision. While at the hospital being treated for his injuries, the Bodden Town man attempted to escape police custody.


He was further arrested on suspicion of assaulting police, disorderly conduct in a police station and attempts to escape lawful custody.


He remains in custody pending further investigation.


Initial Release (28 August):

Just before 10AM today, 28 August, police were dispatched by the 9-1-1 Communications Centre to a report of a two-vehicle collision in the Savannah area of Bodden Town.

It was reported that a collision took place between a HiAce utility van and a BMW sedan in the vicinity of Cool Spring Close. Following the collision an altercation took place between the drivers and one of the men involved retrieved what is believed to be a flare gun, discharged a round, then ran from the location leaving his vehicle behind following the arrival of the police. The remaining driver sustained minor injuries as a result of a physical altercation which occurred between them.

He was followed by the officers at which time it is believed that he ran into a nearby residence. Searches were carried out and one man was subsequently detained for the purpose of carrying out enquires, but later released. The offending man in the incident was not located during the search. His vehicle along with additional live rounds were recovered as evidence by the police.
