UPDATE: Cayman Woman Arrested in Relation to Serious Collision Involving Cyclist

UPDATE (26 April):

This evening, 26 April, officers arrested a woman, age 20 of West Bay, for a number of driving offenses in relation to the serious collision involving a male cyclist which occurred yesterday, 25 April, just after 8:40PM.

She remains in custody as investigations continue.

The cyclist remains in hospital in critical condition.


Initial Release:

Shortly after 8:40PM yesterday, 25 April, officers responded to a report of a traffic collision on South Church Street, in the vicinity of Smith Barcadere, where a cyclist had been struck by an unknown vehicle which then left the location. EMS attended the location and the cyclist was transported to the Cayman Islands Hospital for treatment for serious life-threatening injuries. He remains in hospital in critical condition.

The roadway was temporarily closed as officers conducted investigations, but has since re-opened. The matter remains under investigation.

The vehicle that struck the cyclist and left the scene is described as a dark-colored SUV with front-end damage. Police are actively seeking this vehicle and are appealing to the public for any information. Additionally, the Police are urging local garages to be vigilant for any vehicle that may arrive for repairs matching this description.

Anyone who may have seen a dark-colored SUV traveling in the area around the time of the incident, or who is aware of such a vehicle that appears to have recently sustained front-end damage, is asked to contact the Traffic & Roads Policing Unit at 649-6254 or the RCIPS Major Incident Room at 649-2930.
