Update on Concacaf Caribbean Club Shield and Flow Concacaf Caribbean Club Championship – both cancelled

Miami, FL (Thursday, August 25, 2020) – Concacaf is continuing to work with its stakeholders to plan for the resumption of its suspended competitions as soon as possible.

In the cases of the 2020 Concacaf Caribbean Club Shield and 2020 Flow Concacaf Caribbean Club Championship, originally due to take place in April in Curacao and May in the Dominican Republic respectively, Concacaf unfortunately has no other choice but to cancel both events.

Despite significant efforts to reorganize both competitions to be played in September, the impact of COVID-19 and extensive travel restrictions in the region made this impossible for the Confederation.

As the competitions include qualification for the Scotiabank Concacaf League, scheduled to start on October 20th 2020, September was the last opportunity for them to take place within the current calendar.

The decision to cancel these events was made following discussions with the Curacao Football Association, the Dominican Republic Football Association, the Dominican Football League and communication from participating clubs. We are very grateful for their support and understanding in this challenging situation.

Given the circumstances, the qualification of the Caribbean clubs to the 2021 Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League, and the 2020 Scotiabank Concacaf League, is now determined based on their performance in the group stage of the Flow Concacaf Caribbean Club Championship, which took place in Jamaica in early February.

As such, the top performing team in the group stage, Club Atletico Pantoja (DOM/6 pts), will qualify for the 2021 Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League, while the next three top performing teams in the group stage, Waterhouse FC (JAM/4 pts), Arcahaie FC (HAI/3 pts) and Cibao FC (DOM/2 pts), will qualify for the 2020 Scotiabank Concacaf League.

Concacaf is committed to continuing to deliver club competitions in the Caribbean and will work with our Member Associations and partners to ensure we can do so as soon as possible.

In terms of our wider club competitions calendar, the 2020 Scotiabank Concacaf League is scheduled to begin on October 20th, 2020. Additionally, we continue to work on plans to resume the 2020 Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League later this year to crown a regional champion and qualify them to the FIFA Club World Cup.
