US: Attorney linked to Shkreli resigns from Kaye Scholer

Evan Greebel, the attorney who was arrested alongside former pharmaceutical CEO Martin Shkreli and charged with wire fraud conspiracy, has resigned from Kaye Scholer.
Law firm spokeswoman Andrea Orzehoski said Friday, “He is no longer a Kaye Scholer partner,” and that his resignation was effective immediately.
She declined to say when he resigned or whether his leaving was a result of any findings from Kaye Scholer’s internal investigation.
When Greebel was arrested and charged in December 2015, the firm said in a statement it was “deeply concerned” about the charges against him. Its December statement added, “He has been with us for a relatively short period of time, and all the alleged activities occurred before he joined the firm. We are conducting our own internal investigation, and based on our findings we will take appropriate action.”
The Eastern District U.S. Attorney’s Office alleges that Shkreli and Greebel used a series of settlement and sham consulting agreements that caused biopharmaceutical company Retrophin and its investors to suffer more than $11 million in losses.
Shkreli was Retrophin’s CEO until 2014. Greebel was Retrophin’s outside counsel and a partner at Katten Muchin Rosenman at the time. He joined Kaye Scholer last July.
Greebel was represented by Jonathan Sack and Benjamin Fischer, partners at Morvillo Abramowitz Grand Iason & Anello.
On Feb. 8, Gibson Dunn partners Reed Brodsky and Joel M. Cohen and of counsel Lisa Rubin entered their appearances for Greebel in the criminal and the Securities and Exchange Commission cases against him.
On Friday, Sack and Fischer requested permission to withdraw from the criminal and the SEC cases, leaving Gibson Dunn as his lead counsel.
Sack declined to comment on his firm’s withdrawal. Brodsky declined to comment on Greebel’s resignation and the withdrawal of the Morvillo Abramowitz firm.
