From Caribbean Life

Early Detection Can Save Black Women’s Lives
It’s unfortunate but true: Black women who develop breast cancer have a higher risk of dying from it than women from other groups. That difference begins with inadequate screening. Which is why Black women need to take their screenings especially seriously.

Annual screenings starting at age 40 can make all the difference. “When cancer is detected earlier — before you can feel a lump — is when it’s most treatable and the options are better,“ says Christina Giuliano, MD, Director of Breast Imaging at Maimonides Breast Center. “If you wait until you feel a lump, that is usually years later.”Guidelines differ for those with a higher risk. Those with a family history of breast cancer should start screening as soon as age 30.
