US Mass Shootings and Prescription Drugs

Have you ever wondered if there’s a link between prescription drugs and antidepressants? We certainly have.

The effects of prescription drugs on criminality and violence aren’t widely studied in the United States. However, we compiled data from around the world to better understand the correlation between SSRIs and violence.

Here are some of the highlights based on our research:

  • Between 2000 and 2013, 22% of mass shooters reportedly used prescription or illicit drugs.
  • Mental health diagnoses appeared in the history of 40% of school shooters between 2008 and 2018.
  • Prozac and Effexor were the most commonly identified antidepressants among school shooters between 2000 and 2018.
