Walkers boosts Cayman Islands practice with two attorney hires
Both Stuart and Brett will be members of the firm’s local business team. Walkers’ local practice encompasses a full suite of legal services including general commercial law, employment law, real estate law, regulatory law as well as intellectual property law. Walkers acts for local companies in relation to a range of employment issues including contractual arrangements, disciplinary issues, staff transfers and labour dispute proceedings. General commercial law matters include debt collection, judgement enforcement as well as dispute resolution. Regulatory services include local business licencing, pension provisions, insurance, and compliance.
Walkers has enjoyed strong relationships within the domestic market in recent years, including among its client roster a number of well-recognised employers in the accounting, banking, insurance, leisure and tourism industries, and hopes to expand its local practice by establishing further significant relationships.
Stuart Rowe joins Walkers as Senior Counsel to head Walkers’ real estate group. He specialises in real estate and banking transactions, advising a wide range of clients on the acquisition, disposal, leasing and development of hotel, retail, commercial and residential property in the Cayman Islands, as well as advising local and international financial institutions on lending and restructuring matters. Stuart also provides advice in respect of Cayman company formation and licensing. He will be supported by Nan Erb who qualified as an attorney earlier in the year after successfully completing articles with the firm.
“We are very excited to have Stuart joining the Walkers team. We gain an experienced lawyer as well as a new leader to head our real estate practice group. This will be a great enhancement to our existing local practice.” said Antonia Hardy, Walkers Cayman Islands Managing Partner.
Brett Basdeo joins Walkers as an Associate in its Insolvency & Dispute Resolution team. Brett has significant experience in commercial litigation, having advised fiduciaries and other officeholders and appointees as well as corporate, government and institutional clients on a broad range of disputes. He has appeared as an advocate before various statutory boards, tribunals, the Summary Court and the Grand Court of the Cayman Islands.
Neil Lupton, partner in Walkers’ Insolvency and Dispute Resolution Group, said: “We are delighted to have Brett joining us at Walkers. Brett is a high calibre legal practitioner and we can be certain that he has a long and bright future ahead of him at Walkers.”
