Webinar recordings on Abandoned, Lost, and Otherwise Discarded Fishing Gear in the Caribbean

Safeguarding Caribbean Fisheries by addressing Abandoned, Lost, and Otherwise Discarded Fishing Gear (ALDFG)

Unintended capture of the region’s prized fisheries resources by fishing gear that is no longer under the control of the harvester—whether due to inclement weather, accidents at sea, illegal fishing, or other factors—can seriously undermine the health and sustainability of Caribbean fisheries.
“Abandoned, lost or otherwise discarded fishing gear (ALDFG)” or “ghost gear,” as it is commonly called, thus poses a serious threat to the livelihoods of fishers, as well as to the ecosystems within which our fisheries thrive.
We need an inclusive and proactive approach to tackling this challenge! Therefore, the Caribbean Regional Fisheries Mechanism (CRFM) and the Global Ghost Gear Initiative (GGGI) partnered recently to host two open webinars for stakeholders across our region and international partners to consolidate efforts, while reinvigorating the Caribbean Regional Action Plan to Prevent Abandoned, Lost or Otherwise Discarded Fishing Geardeveloped by the GGGI in consultation with the CRFM and the Gulf and Caribbean Fisheries Institute (GCFI).
We are pleased to share with you the recordings of both webinars:
1. Session 1 was held on Tuesday, 18 February 2025
2. Session 2 was held on Tuesday, 18 March 2025
Please note that all PowerPoint presentations are accessible on the event site.
You may also access related resources, including ALDFG flyers and other communications materials.
