Weekly News | National Gallery of the Cayman Islands

unnamed-3We’ve launched the first in a series of Discovery Resources for students of all ages, to use as a guide to learn about the work of significant artists from the Cayman Islands. We’ve begun the series with one of Cayman’s top artists Bendel Hydes who is well known for his “translucent abstractions”.

Discovery Resources are full of interesting information about our local artists and can be downloaded directly from the National Gallery’s website. We encourage you to use these resources and take part in the conversation about art, get hands on with the creative activities, share with your children and/or community youth groups, and most importantly have fun!

Sculpture of the week…

On the banks of the Yarra River in central Melbourne is an example of public art combined with sound sculpture. The 39 upturned bells are mounted on steel poles and spread through an open space, allowing people to walk between them. The bells are struck by computer-controlled hammers programmed to play tunes by local composers. They were created for celebrations of the centenary of Australia’s federation in 2001.

Artists: Anton Hasell and Neil McLachlan, Melbourne

Sculpture: Federation Bells
