A recent Hurricane season food drive, by students of the Wesleyan Christian Academy, has been a huge success.

The bags of non-perishable food, collected between June and September, were recently presented to representatives of the Department of Children and Family Services. The Department will coordinate the distribution of food throughout the West Bay area later this month.

The project was devised by West Bay Neighbourhood Officer PC Sharon Baillie and WCA Principal Mrs. Becky Profitt as part of the ongoing RCIPS initiative – Junior Police Academy.

“We were absolutely overwhelmed by the excitement and commitment of the students”, said Mrs. Profitt. “They were determined from day-one that this was going to be a success and that they would do all that they could to help people within their own community. There is no doubt that we will be continuing this type of project in the future.”

PC Baillie, who visits the school almost every day, is extremely proud of the efforts made by the students.” They’ve done a great job. This was all about teaching the youngsters about good citizenship and how to be positive role models in the community. It’s clear that they’ve taken those sentiments to heart. I’m sure that many people in the West Bay area will be delighted by the donations of food . The distribution is being coordinated by staff of the Department of Children and Family Services who partnered with us on this important project”

Cassandra Parchment of the Dept. of Children and Family Services said: “We are extremely grateful to be a part of this community effort. The Community spirit of the students of WCA has enabled us to help more people who are in need within West Bay. It is so important for children to recognise others who are in need and see that they too can lend a hand. In doing this they become more aware and gain exposure to what is going on in our own communities and around the world.”
