| Law & Policy Could the Ukraine invasion transform E.U. asylum policy? Following the invasion of Ukraine in February, the E.U. noticeably shifted its approach to asylum policy and welcoming Ukrainian refugees. This stands in stark contrast to its complicity in returning vulnerable migrants and trafficking victims attempting to cross the Mediterranean back to conditions of slavery in Libya. | Forced labor Uyghur communities urge UN human rights chief to investigate This week Uyghur activists held a press conference in Istanbul, Turkey and gathered from around the world in Geneva urgently calling on the UN human rights chief, Michelle Bachelet, to ensure an independent investigation into re-education camps and allegations of Uyghur forced labor during her visit to China’s Uyghur Region later this month. Bachelet has come under scrutiny from rights groups amid concerns her visit will be ineffective if she is not able to conduct a thorough investigation. Read more… |

| Domestic slavery Former domestic worker exploited in France rebuilds life Inès, a migrant domestic worker, shared her experiences of exploitation in France. Migrating from a French-speaking African country, Inès travelled to France to continue her education only to become trapped in domestic servitude. With the support of other migrant workers, Inès was able to flee her abusive employers and rebuild her life. Read more… |
