CAYMAN ISLANDS (GIS) â€“ The Gender Affairs Unit (GAU) gave a $2,500 cheque as part of its ongoing support of the Women.Code (Cayman) programme on Wednesday, 5 May 2021.

The donation, to the not-for-profit tech training provider: Code Cayman, will be used to finance its fifth Women.Code (Cayman) course (Tuesday, 25 May – Tuesday, 29 June 2021). The free programme, being held at Code Cayman’s TechLab in Grand Pavilion, George Town, will offer one 90-minute class a week over six weeks. 

In view of the programme’s growing success, organisers are now expanding its traditional intake by 10 to increase overall class capacity to 25 attendees. Registration for the course is on a first-come-first served basishttps://bit.ly/3tlyAGz.

Brian Tang of the Cartan Group and Code Cayman Co-founder said: “We are extremely excited to have the Gender Affairs Unit renew its sponsorship for this year. Our flagship Women.Code (Cayman) programme continues to be our most popular programme and embodies our goal to provide equal and accessible opportunities to learn about computer science and software development.” 

According to Mr. Tang, the not-for-profit’s 2021 goal is to provide laptops for use in the Technology Centre for course participants who are unable to provide their own.

GAU’s Senior Policy Analyst (Gender, Diversity and Equality), Karlene Bramwell, noted: “The GAU is pleased to provide this sponsorship to Women.Code and the mixed course We.Code . These programmes aim to reduce the gender gap in ICT, while simultaneously enabling participants to obtain skills which can contribute to their individual economic empowerment”. 

In related Code Cayman news, the training provider has branched out to teach code to school-aged children on Cayman Brac, and recently announced the setting up of its first Excel-Code.(Cayman) and Python.Code Cayman programmes.

By attracting financing from the GAU-, private sector- and international entities, Code Cayman is able to provide zero-cost coding and other tech-related opportunities to many under-represented segments across the islands.
