Women, Protagonists in UNESCO’s Latin America and the Caribbean Week

Paris, May 29 (Prensa Latina) The 2018 edition of the Latin American and Caribbean Week was inaugurated today at Unesco, a date that on this occasion is dedicated to highlighting the role of women in the development of the region.
This was emphasized by the Charge d´Affairs of Paraguay to that UN organization, Leticia Casati, who spoke on behalf of the Grulac, the group of 33 countries that make up the subcontinent.

According to the diplomat, ‘we chose women as the thematic axis to recognize their preponderant role in the construction of our nations, both individually and regionally.’

In this regard, she underlined the contribution of women to the economic and social progress of the countries, to the transmission of culture and traditions from generation to generation, as well as to the independence struggles, in which they had an active participation regardless of their social origin.

‘Many women bravely transgressed the barriers that society imposed on their gender,’ she recalled, adding that ‘today, in the XXI century, we are happy for the important achievements in gender equality and women’s rights’, although ‘we still have a long way to go.’
