Trinidad and Tobago’s senior sevens rugby men will return to the Commonwealth Games next year after securing the Caribbean Rugby Sevens title on Sunday in Cayman Islands.
T&T finished as the top Caribbean team at the NACRA Rugby Sevens tournament held on the weekend after turning back Barbados 14-5 in the Men’s third and fourth place playoff. T&T were rewarded with a spot at the 2014 Commonwealth Games along with winners Canada, as well as the Hong Kong Sevens in March next year.
The Caribbean part of the tournament has been dominated by Guyana, who won six consecutive titles from 2006-2011 and were last year’s runners-up, but did not compete this year.
T&T’s women also finished third in the tournament after stopping hosts Cayman Islands 14-7.
After a scoreless first half, T&T got over a setback early in the second period, as Barbados first registered on the score sheets, a try an unmarked Leon Donnelly from a play emerging from a ruck at the far touch line.
But T&T were put ahead 7-5 by Joseph Quashie, who registered his try under the posts after a neat give-and-go.
The insurance for T&T came in the form of a converted James Phillip try, completed after the player collected a high pass.
In the semis, T&T were defeated by the eventual champions, the Maple Leafs running out to a 38-0 shutout of the “Calypso Warriors”. Barbados did register an unconverted try, but were still easily overwhelmed 26-5 by USA Falcons, who ended as tournament runners-up.
T&T played in the second of three four-team groups, Pool B. They had a 2-1 record, having disposed of Curacao 36-5 and the hosts 26-7, before they ran into a wall against USA Falcons, who triumphed 31-0. Canada proved the strongest team in the tournament by whipping the Americans 27-5.
Mexico won the plate final after a perfect record in Pool C, beating Bermuda, Jamaica and British Virgin Islands (BVI). They lost their quarter-final against Barbados, a low-scoring affair, 0-5. But they beat the home side 10-7 to pick up the plate, while Jamaica whip Curacao 34-0 to claim the bowl.
Among the women, T&T won Pool B with victories over Bermuda (17-12), Curacao (45-0) and Jamaica (17-5). In the quarters, they made light work of Turks and Caicos Islands, but were stopped in the final four as Mexico prevailed 17-7 over the T&T women.
The female Maple Leafs coasted to the title with a 51-0 mauling of Mexico, while Jamaica beat Jamaica for the women’s plate, and Turks and Caicos Islands shut down BVI 40-0 for the shield.
