Cayman Rugby: Cayman Islands Overpower Bermuda in RWC Qualifier

From Americas Rugby News

The Cayman Islands kept their Rugby World Cup 2019 dream alive by overpowering Bermuda this evening. The 47-11 win sets up a winner takes all Rugby Americas North fixture against Mexico on July 02 in Mexico City.

For the Cayman Islands the fixture was the second of three Rugby World Cup 2019 qualifiers. The prior match saw the Cayman Islands seeing off the Bahamas 20-8 in what was the second loss for the Bahamas.

Having lost 39-3 to Mexico in the opening round the loss spelt elimination for the Bahamas while Bermuda has now joined them in missing out on advancing to the next phase of qualification.

This evening’s loss for Bermuda was the second after Mexico powered past them, winning 75-10 in May. With the Cayman Islands conceding a similar number of points but scoring less than Las Serpientes did against Bermuda the remaining North Zone fixture has Mexico going in as slight favorites.

The Cayman Islands’ win was by free-flowing. A total of six tries were scored and just one conceded. As a contest the match was over at half time with the Cayman Islands already having scored four points to have secured a bonus point.

The 28-6 half time scoreline included tries to Morgan Shelver, Paul Westin and a Mickey Wilson double. Tommy Edwards kicked two penalties for Bermuda.

Three further tries confirmed it was a win for the Cayman Islands but Bermuda was able to score a consolation try with replacement back Guerhardt Leprechaun crossing.
