Further update: The Canadian national who was reported missing on the 31 December 2013 has not been located to date.

The RCIPS is in liaison with the family of the missing person, Royal Caribbean Cruise Line, Canadian Consulate, FBI and Royal Canadian Mounted Police in investigating his disappearance from the cruise ship ‘Independence of the Seas’.

The Canadian national was last seen at around 1am on Tuesday 31st December and discovered missing at around 7.15am the same day. The ship was travelling from Fort Lauderdale to Grand Cayman. Searches of open water were conducted by the RCIPS Marine unit on Tuesday and Wednesday to no avail. An all ships broadcast alert was also made and repeated on Wednesday.

The investigation into the missing person report continues by the GT CID.

Update: Missing Passenger from Independence of the Seas

The RCIPS Marine Unit continues to search for the missing Canadian national who it is suspected may have fallen from the Independence of the Seas at about 6 am on Tuesday 31 December 2013 at approximately 13 miles NW of Grand Cayman.

The matter was reported to the police at 9:42 am that morning and a full day of search by the RCIPS Marine Unit was unsuccessful. The George Town CID also interviewed staff and witnesses on board the Independence of the Seas and the matter is still under investigation.

The Port Authority broadcasted an appeal to all marine traffic to be on the lookout for the missing passenger, and this appeal is being updated as the search continues.

Original story – Passenger Missing From visiting Cruise Ship

At about 10:00 am Tuesday 31 December 2013 the RCIPS responded to a report of a missing person from the vessel “Independence of the Seas”, a passenger cruise ship which was docked in the George Town Harbour.

It was reported at 9:42 am earlier that morning that a 65 yrs old passenger was reported missing by his wife at 7:25 am that morning. The couple are both nationals of Canada.

Both retired to bed about 1:00 am 31/12/13. The wife woke up at 7:15 am but did not see her husband. She searched for him and when she did not find him she made the report of her husband missing at about 7:25 am. At that time the ship was headed into GT Port.

A search of the entire ship was organized and the CCTV viewed. The search was completed with negative result.

Police Marine Unit conducted a search of the relevant area up until low light without success.

The GTPS CID is investigating.

The RCIPS received a report at 9:42 am Tuesday 31 December 2013, of a missing passenger from a visiting cruise liner. The incident seems to have occurred about 13 miles offshore Grand Cayman. Search operations are underway and an investigation has commenced.
