With a stern test in Guadeloupe serving as preparation, the Cayman Islands Women’s National Team switches its focus to matches against the University of New Haven (UNH) Chargers starting on Sunday.

The Cayman Islands national women compete against UNH on Sunday and Wednesday at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex.

In preparation for the matches, the Women’s national team logged playing time and bonded on a journey to Guadeloupe last week; where they played two matches as part of the Women’s Day celebrations.

Against the experienced Guadeloupe national team, the Cayman team, featuring several teenagers lost 2-0. Two days later, the team recovered and scored an impressive 7-0 victory over Guadeloupe club side Saint-Claude, led by a hattrick from Tatiana Ramoon.

“The team was organised, disciplined and gave of their best,” said First Vice President of the Cayman Islands Football Association Bruce Blake, who travelled with the team to the French speaking island.

“CIFA is pleased with the effort of the players and coaching staff in preparation and we are eager to watch the national team against the University of New Haven.”

The Cayman Islands National team features several players who participated in the CONCACAF Women’s Under 20 Championship and Girls Under 15 Championships both held in the Cayman Islands last year.

“I was very proud of their performance,” said Head Coach Alan Purvis.

“With more work on the training ground this week, our team will give of their best against the New Haven’s excellent players.”

The University of New Haven is located in West Haven, Connecticut, and its women’s soccer team competes in the North East 10 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division two. The New Haven Chargers Women’s Soccer Team ended the 2014 NCAA Division Two season with a six wins, nine losses and 2 drawn results.

“The program is extremely excited about its upcoming soccer trip to the Cayman Islands,” said Head coach Laura Duncan. “The players have worked very hard to fundraise for the once in a lifetime opportunity to play competitive games against the CIFA National teams and train in their prestigious stadiums.”

Before Sunday’s opening fixture, the UNH will participate in a Beach Soccer event on the world-famous Seven Mile Beach, before the international fixtures on Sunday and Wednesday.

The tour wraps up for the visitors on Thursday, 19 March 2015 with a girl’s youth Clinic, in conjunction with the Cayman Islands Football Association.
