World Chocolate Day, Can you help?

From Krysta Bisnauth, Freedom United

On Sunday, we observed World Chocolate Day, and whilst I may not be alone in hiding how much chocolate I indulge in, that’s not the transparency that concerns us.  Did you know that an estimated 1.8 million children currently work on cocoa plantations?[1] In addition, most of these children have engaged in at least one form of hazardous child labor.   Every grueling minute counts for these children, so we must keep pushing. What we need now more than ever is to expand our community and strengthen our impact. Cedric, a 15-year-old boy, recounted: It’s very important that you swing the machete away from your body. In the beginning, I couldn’t do that very well and would chop my shin.”[2]  COLIN, as a human rights advocate and mother, this makes me very angry.

With overwhelming support from the Freedom United community, we convinced two chocolate giants, Mondelez and Unilever, to commit to greater supply chain transparency[3] and successfully lobbied the European Union to making living income for cocoa farmers a reality![4]  Our community can turn the tide if we work together!

Godiva, Lindt, Starbucks and other chocolate companies have promised to clean up their supply chains to protect these children, but they have not delivered.  Meanwhile, in 2022, chocolate companies generated $206 billion in revenue, and the industry is expected to bring in as much as $263 billion by 2030.[5]  We can’t let them get away with this!

Together, we can hold these businesses accountable for allowing the exploitation of these innocent children.
