World’s longest flight from Singapore to New York City to resume in 2018

Singapore Airlines announced Tuesday it will resume its 19-hour flight from Singapore to New York in 2018, to reclaim the title of world’s longest flight.

Singapore Airlines operated the route from Singapore to New York until 2013, but stopped the service because of its inefficiency.

“Our customers have been asking us to re-start non-stop Singapore-U.S. flights and we are pleased that Airbus was able to offer the right aircraft to do so in a commercially viable manner,” said Singapore Airlines CEO Goh Choon Phong in a press release.

The airline just placed an order for 67 Airbus A350s, to be delivered in 2018. Once these more efficient planes are added to the fleet, nonstop service to Los Angeles and New York from Singapore will resume, according to the airline.

“The A350 is the perfect, flexible platform for such operations, offering unrivaled operating economics for the very longest routes,” said Airbus President and CEO Fabrice Brégier.

The distance from Singapore to New York is 9,521 miles, with the flight to Los Angeles a bit shorter, at 8,769 miles.

Flights currently available from Singapore to New York can take 22 hours or more, with at least one connection. Getting from Singapore to Los Angeles takes 17 hours or more, also with a connection.

In February 2016, Emirates will begin flying from Dubai to Panama City, a 17-hour and 35-minute flight covering 8,590 miles. That threatens to unseat the current world record holder, Qantas, which has a flight from Dallas, Texas to Sydney, Australia — an 8,578-mile journey in 17 hours.

Singapore Airlines is also considering other nonstop flights to other airports in the U.S., according to the airline.
