George Town, 10 September, 2016 – The Young Caymanian Leaders Foundation today announces the names of the five finalists for YCLA 2016. The YCLA Selection Committee revealed the names after a careful, in-depth review of the nominations that were put forward this year by the community.

Jonathan Tibbetts, Chairman of the Selection Committee, says, “It’s always an honor to review these amazing nominations of young Caymanians who are each and every one of them deserving of the award. We are so fortunate in Cayman to have these young leaders tirelessly working at all times improving our community as they serve.”

Each nominee’s candidacy must be vetted from a number of different perspectives to meet several key criteria, all of which combined describe a well-rounded young person who demonstrates strong leadership skills and the ability to serve as a role model to Cayman’s youth. Among the qualities sought are outstanding moral character, personal and professional achievement, volunteerism and community involvement, and a strong overall commitment to mentoring young people.

The five finalists for YCLA 2016 are below.
Further details about each finalist will be provided to the media in the coming weeks.

Dr. Alexandra Bodden, age 30, of George Town
Dr. Kristina Maxwell (nee Bramwell), age 30, of West Bay
Shena Ebanks, age 32, of West Bay
Tedrick Green, age 28, of George Town
Brianna Wilkerson (nee Ebanks), age 27, of George Town

The recipient of the prestigious award is asked to give generously of their time and talents to meet and speak to young people all over the islands. The 2015 YCLA Recipient Kellie Sandy (McGee) has spread her message of inspiration and mentorship to over ten thousand young students during 35 official speaking engagements at school events, sports teams, youth clubs and churches. Her commitment to mentoring the youth of Cayman is exceptional.

YCLA 2016

The YCLA gala celebration will be held on Saturday, 5 November at the Kimpton Seafire Resort and Spa, as the recipient of the 2016 award will be named during the live broadcast. This year’s special event will mark the 16-year anniversary of the awards program, making it one of the most memorable and inspiring moments of the organization’s history in the community.

Chris Duggan the Foundation’s Acting Honorary Board Chairman says, “Once again this year we appreciate the community for the tremendous outpouring of enthusiasm for the YCLA. It is through the platform that the YCLA provides these young leaders that so much good comes from the event. Many of the 75 previous Finalists, including myself, are still serving our communities today and demonstrating their concern for our youth and leadership opportunities. We are so grateful to our sponsors that we have been able to continue this program year after year.”

The Finalists:

The Young Caymanian Leadership Foundation on Saturday named four women and one man as finalists for the top spot in 2016’s annual awards ceremony. The Finalists are from various professions as healthcare professionals, finance and business experts.
The five were chosen from nominations put forth by the community consisting of young Caymanians between the ages of 20 and 35. A subcommittee comprising YCLA Alumni then embarked on an in-depth and extensive undertaking. Careful consideration was given to the information provided on the nomination form and each nominee was required to submit a recent resume for the selection process. After the careful and detailed evaluation, the five finalists for the 2016 YCLA were selected.
Although there is no single defining factor that can be attributed to the role of a true leader, there are certain qualities that the Recipient of the YCLA must have. Those qualities include a strong social conscience, humility and the demonstrated ability to uphold the highest moral and ethical standards in his or her personal, professional and spiritual lives.
Whilst the level of academic achievement is important, the demonstrated ability to serve as a role model and to be worthy of being so emulated by our young people has been a key factor in the selection process. It therefore follows that the level and nature of community involvement (whether by way of voluntary service or participation in local charitable or other service organizations) will undoubtedly be one of the deciding factors in the selection of this year’s Recipient of the 2016 Young Caymanian Leadership Award.

I see this the most in her role as volunteer staff with InterVarsity Christian Fellowship and now as the Treasurer for InterVarsity here in Cayman. For the past seven years she has devoted every ounce of herself to the growth and development of college students, particularly women”, says Tomy Wilkerson her loving husband and YCLA co-nominator.

He is a member and active volunteer with the Kiwanis Club, as well as a founding member and the current Curator for the Cayman based Hub of the Global Shapers. “He has always struck me as the right balance of ‘humble’ and ‘go-getter,’ and it has always been evident to me that he is innately passionate about his community in organizations such as Global Shapers and Kiwanis, and does all that he can because he cares, and not for validation from the public”, says nominator and current YCLA Recipient Mrs. Kellie Sandy.
