When Angela first came to California on a P-1A visa for athletes, her recruiter falsely promised to process her work visa. Once in the U.S., Angela worked in an elderly care facility. Her trafficker threatened her by telling her that she had to work for 10 years and that she owed $12,000 to cover her transportation and visa. Jayson is another survivor advocate who worked alongside Angela. In Jayson’s case, the same trafficker withheld his passport, preventing him from working outside of the facility, and did not allow him to take any days off. If California Senate Bill 477 (SB477) had covered Angela and Jayson’s visa category, they would have been better protected from forced labor. That is why they have joined our campaign calling on California to amend Senate Bill 477! Tune in as they share their firsthand experience and speak about why California must address this human rights issue. |
