Outdoor Painting: Making Creativity a Communal Effort

In April, the National Gallery hosted a new series of outdoor painting sessions alongside artists Raphael Powery and John Broad. Inspired by the National Collection plein air watercolours currently on view in ‘Thatch Roofs & Ironwood Posts’, these events were envisioned as casual community gatherings that encourage creativity in a supportive environment.

Hosted in the gardens of historic cottages, our subjects were beautiful traditional cottages that showcase the architectural and cultural heritage of the Cayman Islands. The first event was held in partnership with the National Trust for the Cayman Islands at Nurse Leila’s house in West Bay. This was followed by a session at the Rankine House in the QEII Botanic Park’s Heritage Garden. At both events, NGCI provided art materials at no cost to participants while Raphael and John shared their professional painting advice with both novice and experienced guests.

Participants mingled with each other, enjoying the lovely outdoor environment while making new friends and developing their technical watercolour skills including perspective, colour saturation, and adjusting for sunlight conditions.

We look forward to hosting more plein air painting sessions across the country in celebration of Caymanian built heritage and shared creative practice. Visit our website for updates on the next outdoor painting gatherings!

Sponsorship Thank You: Cayman International School

The students, parents and faculty of CIS have graciously banded together in raising funds for their civvies day efforts which they have decided to donate to the NGCI this year. It’s an honour to receive direct sponsorship from a school that consistently participates in the National Gallery’s tour programme with enthusiasm.

Donations to the National Gallery’s tour programme enable us to ensure that access to the NGCI’s exhibitions are made equitable and available to the public of the Cayman Islands. Through generous community support, we are able to continue our engagement with NGCI visitors and help facilitate an appreciation for the practice of the arts in the Cayman Islands.
